Making an impact on noncommunicable diseases and mental health in Lebanon - Meet Edwina Zoghbi (2025)

Storyline: Edwina Zoghbi is a National officer for noncommunicable diseases and mental health at WHO in Lebanon. In this video filmed in November 2024, she shares her experience of working as a WHO employee and what inspires her every day to address inequities in health she sees around her. Impacted by the recent conflict in Lebonon, she speaks of the toll it has taken on local staff and the local communities.

Thailand: Checking hypertension everywhere - WHO's achievement explained by Dr Jos Vandelaer (2025)

Storyline: Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a condition in which the blood vessels have persistently raised pressure. Blood pressure is created by the force of blood pushing against the walls of blood vessels (arteries) as it is pumped by the heart. The higher the pressure, the harder the heart has to pump. In Thailand a quarter* of all people have hypertension and only for about a quarter of them this high risk factor for heart disease and stroke is under control. (*Interview recorded in late 2024). Dr Jos Vandelaer, representative of the World Health Organization in Thailand, explains how WHO is supporting a new approach to managing hypertension.

Burkina Faso: New infectious diseases unit - WHO's achievement explained by Dr Seydou Coulibaly (2025)

Storyline: The number of high-threat infectious hazards continues to rise; some of these are re-emerging and others are new. WHO develops global strategies for the prevention and control of epidemic-prone diseases, such as yellow fever, cholera and influenza. With partners from a wide range of technical, scientific and social fields, WHO brings together all globally available resources to counter these high-threat infectious hazards and scale these strategies to regional and country levels. In Burkina Faso, Dr Seydou Coulibaly, WHO Country Representative, explains that this goal resulted in the creation of a new hospital unit strengthening the country's capacity to face infectious diseases, with training of staff and equipment of a laboratory.

Guinea: Blocking the return of polio with vaccination in gold mining areas (2025)

Storyline: Guinea was a country that had been polio-free since 2015. But, we see in several African countries a new importation and recirculation of different variants of poliomyelitis virus. The gold mining areas in Guinea are overcrowded with a mix of populations coming from neighbouring countries and these sites are considered to be home to many diseases that affect the whole country. With national and local health authorities, the World Health Organization has developed an innovative process to make sure that polio vaccination can cover all remote places of these mining areas.

Sudan: Malaria vaccination in times of conflict (2025)

Storyline: In the context of over 13 million persons who fled their homes in Sudan due to the conflict, the burden of Malaria and other diseases remains another important health priority to care for. Hopefully the malaria vaccination started in 2024 and would be scaled up in the country in the coming months.

WHO: A Global Home for Health (2023)

Storyline: The World Health Organization (WHO) was established in 1948 and was initially housed at the Palais des Nations until the mid-1960s. WHO outgrew its accommodation and it became clear that WHO needed its own home. After an international competition, a design by the well-known Swiss architect Jean Tschumi was chosen to create the main building of WHO’s headquarters in Geneva. It was the last building designed by Tschumi, who died just before its construction. His son Bernard Tschumi, a teenager at the time, and a world renowned architect today, saw the making of the project and tells how architecture was used in order to provide an identity and image to the Organization. Bernard then helped select the winning design of the latest extension building completed in 2021 which works in harmony with the iconic main building. After the renovation of the main building to be completed by 2024, this new extension together with the joint WHO/UNAIDS building that was completed in 2006, create a balanced campus that is highly sustainable and fully dedicated to find solutions to the biggest challenges that humanity has to face in order to achieve health for all and a healthy planet.
